from openbb import obb prints Building... and takes 30 to 60 seconds while it wires up every installed extension. After that it imports in about 10.uv installed so it can run uvx.In V5 the openbb package ships the data sources but leaves out the friendly menu: obb.equity, obb.economy, obb.derivatives and the rest now live in an extra called routers. Install that and the README example works.
AttributeError: 'App' object has no attribute 'equity' means you installed openbb without [routers].The MCP server ships with tool discovery off, so it hands your agent every endpoint at once: 1,095 tools, about 5.8 MB of descriptions. With --tool-discovery it serves 14 tools that search and call the rest on demand. I measured both on a fresh V5 install.

The server writes its defaults to ~/.openbb_platform/mcp_settings.json on first run. Setting enable_tool_discovery to true there makes the flag permanent.
Each of these returned data on a fresh install with no credentials set. The provider in the middle column is the one OpenBB picked by default.

credentials block of ~/.openbb_platform/user_settings.json as fred_api_key or eia_api_key. The error message names the exact field it wants.openbb without the routers. pip install "openbb[routers]" and restart Python.~/.openbb_platform/user_settings.json under credentials.--tool-discovery. Restart it with the flag.openbb-yfinance 2.0 installs separately but is AGPL-3.0, not Apache. openbb-fmp has no V5 release yet.BTCUSD on the default provider in my test. If crypto matters to you, check it before you build on it.To move to a new machine, copy user_settings.json and reinstall. Nothing else holds state.
